Fire ponds, dams and spillways in Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough

Earthworks for firefighting water, farm and irrigation dams, and spillway upgrades. Talk to us early, before the dry.

FIRE PONDS · FARM DAMS · SPILLWAYS

Water storage, built to the agreed design

Aspect carries out earthworks for fire ponds, farm dams and spillways across Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough. We work with rural landowners and their designers to agree the excavation, embankment, drainage and access scope before starting. Whether you are planning new water storage or upgrading an existing spillway, talk to Mitch about the site and what the water is for.

Pond and dam earthworks

Aspect carries out the earthworks for:

  • Firefighting water ponds and access earthworks.

  • Farm and irrigation dam excavation and embankment work.

  • Spillway excavation, drainage and erosion-protection earthworks.

  • Access tracks and working areas for construction and future maintenance.

  • Earthworks for pond upgrades, with liner and specialist installation responsibilities agreed separately.

A fire pond, irrigation dam and effluent pond have different design and operating requirements. Dairy effluent storage is planned separately from ordinary water storage, so tell us early if that is what you need.

HOW IT WORKS

From site review to agreed delivery

1. Understand the purpose: tell us the location, intended use, approximate storage need and any existing plans.

2. Set the responsibilities: establish who handles design, approvals, geotechnical advice, liners and specialist components before work is priced.

3. Agree the earthworks: define excavation, fill, drainage, spillway interfaces, access and the construction programme.

4. Build to the design: carry out the agreed earthworks and coordinate with your engineer and specialist suppliers.

5. Handover: confirm the inspections, records and maintenance information required for our part of the work.

Design, consent requirements and any firefighting access arrangements must be checked for the particular site. We do not apply one region's requirements to every project or promise that a dam is consent-free based on one dimension.

PROJECT EXAMPLE

Spillways and existing dam upgrades

A spillway upgrade can involve more than moving soil. The agreed scope may include excavation, fill, rock placement, drainage and interfaces with retaining structures and concrete works. Aspect coordinates the earthworks with the relevant designers and trades; external builders construct retaining-wall structures.

For a Richmond spillway serving a 20-million-litre dam, the project involved 630 m³ of fill, 115 tonnes of rip-rap, 630 m of geofabric, a 35 m retaining wall, a 20 m concrete block wall and a concrete spillway with shear key and overflow pipe. The work took three weeks. These are the figures for that project, not a standard specification or timeframe for another dam.

Fire pond, dam and spillway FAQs

Common questions from landowners planning water storage or a spillway upgrade. Still unsure? Call Mitch on 021 502 429.

Can you build a pond for firefighting water?

Yes, we can discuss the earthworks for a firefighting pond and the access needed around it. The required storage, draw-off arrangement and appliance access need to be established for your property before the construction scope is agreed.

How much water does a fire pond need in Tasman?

For a new dwelling in a Tasman rural zone without a fire hydrant within 135 m, Tasman District Council's guide asks for at least 45,000 litres of firefighting water, between 6 m and 90 m from the dwelling and accessible to firefighting equipment, or a home fire-sprinkler system (Tasman District Council). We check the current rule for your property before we quote.

Can you upgrade an existing dam spillway?

Yes. Send photographs, the location and any existing plans or inspection advice. We will discuss the earthworks and coordination needed, including whether further engineering input is required before pricing.

Do you provide pond design and liners?

We agree those responsibilities at the start. A project may need specialist design, geotechnical advice and a liner supplier or installer alongside the earthworks. Your quote should make clear who is providing each element rather than assume everything is included.

Will the project need consent?

That depends on the location, size, waterway effects and proposed work. Establish the current requirements with the relevant council and designer before construction. Earthworks, water storage and work near rivers can involve different approvals.

What affects the price?

Excavation volume, ground conditions, access, embankment design, rock, liners and spillway requirements all affect the job. Send Mitch the available information for an initial discussion. We price the agreed scope rather than publish per-service or hourly rates.

When should we plan the work?

Start the discussion early enough to allow for design, approvals and specialist suppliers. Construction timing depends on the ground, weather and programme; winter work can be possible in suitable conditions. We respond to routine enquiries within 48 hours, but that is not a promise of a start date.
